Our Arts Town

Dear {name},

Minutes
WORKING GROUP: GUISBOROUGH ARTS CENTRE
09 October 2023, 19:15

Apologies

Peter Walkley, Bill Suthers, Tom Rolfe, Charlie & Denise Rooney, Julie Hart, and others (I apologise too, for my poor memory...)

After a brief introduction the meeting divided into 2 working groups (re the Building, the Events).

1.   Introduction

An arts centre building is pointless without events to populate it, the events are pointless unless people come to take part.

Therefore we need to be genuinely community-led and to promote community engagement. We cannot succeed without many people in Guisborough supporting the project; evidence that they do is also needed to support bids for funding.

2.   The events team

Picked events to raise our profile, and make our presence felt - these will be a fundraising multiplier because more people will be involved.

Ideas to be further developed in the next design session:

·       what does Guisborough mean to you?

·       Involve schools – postcards trail

·       artists

·       low cost / no cost

·       trail of venues – half term – include churches -

·       finance – crowd funding – donations – arts event.

·       Busking event – David McCarther

·       insurance

·       constitution

·       Hebden Bridge!!

·       workshops in pubs

·       collage found art materials from scrap store

·       Joan Cuthbertson – CIC – Whippetup

·       Choir

·       taster sessions – week event.

·       Can the events also promote the survey which will help establish level of demand for the arts centre; also use social media

3.   The Building Team

We need to start fundraising in order to be credible. Even if it is small to start with.

Sombre bit of news: that Saltburn Community and Arts Centre needs >£20k by March 2024 to avoid closure. They have an old building that eats money. All our Guisborough venues are also old buildings – St Nicholas church, Bow St Hall, GMC, the former cinema, Sunnyfield House…

Consider if our arts centre as a modern energy-efficient building should also be a community centre; consolidates common interest and provides enhanced public benefit.

Considered:

·       where?

·       Include cinema? Theatre? Maker space; cafe; 250-300 seats >= 130m2

·       name, logo

·       ? approach schools re design

·       RCVDA re constitution

·       Helmsley – look at Pickering

·       Pete Smith (Emily Pisarro’s parents) – eco house;   ?Architect etc

·       Kate Jaeffels (lives Stanghow) re drawing down funding; Together Middlesbrough and Cleveland

·       Sabaat Centre. Normanby Rd, Eston (? ex church); exemplar re arts centre

·       Community Development Workers – can contact people and see what is needed.

·       College, Prior Pursglove.

Welcome to Terry Doyle; Terry brings a wealth of experience re supporting community projects.

Next steps

  • The two teams will meet to develop these ideas into practical plans.
  • Bernard will arrange next meetings and notify / publicise
  • As we move more into team working we will avoid a bottleneck whereby all the work goes through one person and risks being a ‘single point of failure’.

Meeting ended 8.30pm.
